Dr. Rui Fernandes is Medical Director of Oncology for the UF Health Northeast Region, where he provides strategic leadership for cancer care delivery across the four-hospital system in Northeast Florida. In this role, he oversees clinical quality initiatives, oncology program development, physician recruitment, and strategic growth in alignment with national accreditation standards. As Professor of Surgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville, he holds appointments in multiple departments and serves as Associate Chairman of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Chief of the Division of Head and Neck Surgery, and Director of the Center for Reconstructive Surgery.
Dr. Fernandes is Board Certified with a Certificate of Added Qualification in Head and Neck Oncology and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery. A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (ad hominem), he completed his medical degree at the University of Alabama, dental degree as valedictorian at Boston University, and fellowship training in maxillofacial oncology and microvascular surgery at the University of Maryland. He also completed the Surgical Leadership Program at Harvard Medical School with distinction.
Dr. Fernandes has authored the textbook "Atlas of Local & Regional Flaps in Head and Neck Surgery" and co-edited "Oral, Head & Neck Oncology and Reconstructive Surgery." He serves as Consulting Editor for the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Clinics of North America and has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals. His contributions have earned him Presidential Lectureships at major international conferences, multiple teaching awards including the University of Florida International Educator of the Year, and honorary fellowships from surgical societies in Spain, Mexico, Pakistan, Panama, and Costa Rica.
Dr. Fernandes currently serves as President of the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (IAOMS) and is Past President of the American Academy of Craniomaxillofacial Surgeons. His leadership extends across multiple professional organizations, and he maintains an active clinical practice focusing on complex head and neck oncologic resection and microvascular reconstruction. Through his role as Program Director of the Head and Neck Oncologic Surgery and Microvascular Fellowship, he has trained numerous surgeons who have advanced to leadership positions nationally and internationally.
