With the recent tragic earthquakes in Haiti and Chile, IAOMS President Larry W. Nissen urges members to consider the formation of a Maxillofacial Disaster Relief Team to help out those affected by such tragedies.

The 2nd IAOMS Educational Course in Malaysia will take place at the University of Malaya, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Kuala Lumpur. The host is Professor Zainal, head of the department. The topic will be trauma and the speakers will be:

The fourth course for the IAOMS Continuing Education program in Paraguay will be held in Encarcion on April 22-24, 2010. Featured speakers will be Prof. Dra. Edela Puricelli (Brazil), who will speak on the topic of Pre-Prosthetic Surgery, and Rafael Martin Granizo (Spain), who will speak on the topic of Implants.

The IAOMS is proud to announce that it has entered into an exclusive academic affiliation to develop an internet-based repository and educational tools in oral and maxillofacial surgery for its membership through IVIDENT.

IAOMS Councilor for Peru, Samuel Allen,  has begun the Borderless Craniofacial Project with the assistance of Health Volunteers Overseas. Borderless Craniofacial will work to increase the standard of care of low-income patients in Peru and provide them with maxillofacial as well as craniofacial treatment at reduced fees by working closely with the Peruvian health system. The goal of the collaboration between Borderless Craniofacial, and Health Volunteers Overseas is both to provide excellent patient care to the less fortunate in Peru as well as to provide a residency training program for motivated oral and maxillofacial surgeons.

At its recent International Conference of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ICOMS) in Shanghai, Peoples Republic of China, the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (IAOMS) elected its President-Elect for the 2012-2013 term: Kishore P. Nayak of Bangalore, India. The Association also elected the following Fellows to serve on the IAOMS Executive Committee as Members-at-Large for the 2010-2011 term: Cesar A. Guerrero of Caracas, Venezuela; Gabriele A. Millesi of Vienna, Austria; and Joseph F. Piecuch of Farmington, Connecticut, USA. Robert T. Woodwards of Manchester, United Kingdom was appointed by 2010-2011 President Larry W. Nissen to serve as Treasurer.

It was standing-room-only at the Research Symposium on Tuesday, May 26th during the 19th International Conference on Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Included in the Symposium were sessions on the following:
--Hierarchy of evidence in the literature
--How to write a manuscript
--Pitfalls and classical errors
Organization of Research Interest Groups (RIGs)
The audience also broke out into the 4 most requested RIGs based on the data from the recent research survey on the IAOMS website.
